just found: Splash Page-MTV has a great Steve Lieber drawing on their opening page (and a nice photo of the artist too), but you only see it briefly before a bunch of text boxes cover up most of it, unless you freeze the screen like I did. Do that and get a look at it full size. Steve and i have long shared an interest in the atmospheric effects that can be achieved by mixing up the various techniques of black line art, including dot tones and white paint.

I love the pruity of your black and white drawings, and I'm not that impressed with this drawing! Okay, I pissed you off but his work doesn't compare to your detail. Okay, I too am an artist. A modern artist! I paint huge paintings, they aren't always pretty or match the decor. namaste - yoga gal - geri

Good thing you said to look closer: The effect doesn't really show in the smaller size.

Thanks for the pointer! Revisiting Whiteout for the last third of the trilogy has been really interesting. I've been working to match the look of stuff I did almost a decade ago.
Here's a jpeg from the upcoming book that's big enough to see how I'm handling the combination of line and tone:

Analysing their CSS reveals the original jpeg here:

Steve's work is really nice and solid.

I noticed in a lot of your older work you used to cut out the dot tone paper in rough shapes to use as shade, or to use as the leaves in a tree etc. Have you ever considered using coloured paper in your colour work in the same way?

Dear mister Campbell

I’m writing to you because I want to say thanks for the help. And not about the blog, cause I have not read your blog. And I don’t think I will because I’m not a blog reader. When I come to think of it I have never ever read a blog at all. I’m sorry.
But I have read your books, and that’s why I am writing to you.

It all began with FROM HELL. I found that the drawings reminded me of the way I used to draw when I was a small lad. They where so... free!
Well, anyway. Just after I finished FROM HELL my wife give birth to our son, Tom Hast.
So now I was about to become the great artist and inspiring father who would show his son the fun and joy of artistry. EVEN though it means not being published regularly and have a job by the side so that you can pay rent

Then it suddenly happened.
Nothing!
Could not work!
Did not feel like it.
Bah!

I thought that this was a normal thing and took a break, since it had worked before.
And during the summer I started to work again.
But no, it was a false alarm. I still didn’t want to work.
I’d have to face the facts.

I did not feel the joy in it anymore.

It’s been almost 8 months since I finished something.
I have just been sitting and staring at the drawing desk.
And watch TV and films. Just laying in the couch.
Doing nothing.

I started to order cowboy hats. And read about Sam Peckinpah … again!

And now I feel that something is about to happen.
And that’s where you come in, Mr Campbell!
Thanks to your books THE FAITH OF THE ARTIST and AFTER THE SNOOTER

I looked away all the joys and fun in a box
And you was ONE of the keys that looked up the box.

Thank you and well done!

Best regards

Ralle Hast

Ps. I’m going to read Bacchus also…

I can't promise to not be honest :)

And as for suggesting avenues for publication, i go around ranting to myself all day about how stupid the publishing world is, so I'd be not much help there.

I note you don't have an online presence. I suggest you leave an email contact address here, I'll delete it and at the same time email you my street address.
